MOVIE-TRACE

Understanding MPXV Viral Clearance in Mpox Patients and Evaluating Transmission Dynamics of MPXV in Mpox Cases and Contacts

The aim of the MOVIE-TRACE Study is to provide critical insights into the dynamics of MPXV viral clearance and person-to-person transmission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The overall design of the project combines two linked prospective observational cohort studies:

  1. Identification and follow-up of Mpox index cases (MOVIE) to understand viral kinetics and duration of infectivity and
  2. identification of close contacts of these index cases (TRACE) to understand Secondary Attack Rates (SAR) and determinants of transmission.

In the MOVIE Study individuals are followed for 56 days with collection of samples from lesions, oropharynx, blood and urine. Linked contacts are followed for 14 days in the TRACE study with collection of blood and oropharyngeal samples to detect both symptomatic and asymptomatic onward transmission.
